Tips to Help Get You Through This Heat

Jul 02, 2024

Extreme heat waves can be challenging, but there are effective strategies to stay cool and safe. Here are some practical tips for individuals and communities, including ways to help outside and stray animals.

Stay Hydrated

For People:

- Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

- Avoid beverages that can dehydrate you, such as alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks.

For Animals:

- Set up multiple water stations for stray animals. Ensure the water is clean and kept in shaded areas.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

For People:

- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing to help your body stay cool.

- Use hats and sunglasses to protect yourself from direct sunlight.

For Animals:

- If you have pets, avoid dressing them up and ensure they can access shaded areas.

Limit Outdoor Activities

For People:

- Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.

- If you need to exercise, do so early in the morning or late in the evening.

For Animals:

- Avoid walking pets during peak heat times. Early morning or late evening walks are safer.

- Never leave pets in parked cars, even for a short period, as temperatures can rise rapidly.

Create a Cool Indoor Environment

For People:

- Use fans and air conditioning to cool your home. If you don’t have AC, spend time in air-conditioned public places like libraries or malls.

- Keep blinds and curtains closed during the day to block out the sun’s heat.

For Animals:

- Provide cool, shaded areas for stray animals to rest. If possible, set up a makeshift shelter with ventilation.

Eat Light and Cool Foods

For People:

- Opt for light meals and foods with high water content, such as fruits and vegetables.

- Avoid heavy, hot meals that can increase your body temperature.

For Animals:

- Provide wet food for stray animals, as it has higher moisture content than dry food.

Use Cool Compresses and Showers

For People:

- Take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature.

- Use damp, cool cloths on your neck, wrists, and forehead.

For Animals:

- If you encounter a stray animal in distress, gently apply cool (not cold) water to their fur and paws.

Advocate for Community Resources

For People:

- Promote and utilize community cooling centers where people can escape the heat.

- Participate in or organize community events that provide information and resources on staying cool during heat waves.

For Animals:

- Partner with local shelters to raise awareness and resources for stray animals.

- Encourage local businesses to set up pet-friendly policies during heat waves, allowing pets to stay cool indoors.
